A Select Series of Portraits of Faces from The Wick Painted at the Eton Mission:
Hackney Wick as it stands, is a place on the verge of disappearance. What will the faces of Hackney Wick look like after it has morphed from non-destination into Olympic Village? This Industrial Ghost town is home to artistic and musical talent, immigrants, fine-up-standings and the penniless. A series of 10 WickCentric habitants came to the portrait sessions dressed in their own character get-up in a unique environment: The historic Eton Mission.
The WickCentris series contains portraits of musicians from the Hackney Marshins (Laura), Ralph of the Hackney Boots, artists Stephen Gill, Snoozie Haxagon & Ingrid Z, Cllr of the Wick Ward Christopher Kennedy, author Iain Sinclair and those set to be displaced by demolition: Des & Willie of the Original Club and the dancer Madalena. The sitters were selected for their roles in the local community and were asked to come as they were or would like to be represented in relation to their role within the community.
Portraits were made by means of painting, photography and drawing in three hour sessions.
Sculptures from the Sculpture Workshop organised by John Karran:
The Thursday evening Sculpture Workshop has been running weekly for 3 months and we currently sculpt in clay and wax, directly from life models. The variety of backgrounds of the participants, in painting, carving, puppetry and casting, brings a great energy to the workshops. We also have casting workshops on Sunday’s to complement the Thursday sessions.
